NEW DELHI: Backing a 12-year-old's preference for her father against her mother who "scolded her on petty things", a Delhi court granted custody to the father, cautioning that over-criticism may push the girl to rebellion in her teens.
"The minor who was found to be an intelligent girl in her interaction with the court, has twice stated her wish to reside with the company of the petitioner (father)," guardian judge Gautam Manan said in his order, ruling against the mother who currently has custody.
"I am of considered opinion that the paramount welfare of the child is with the man and he is entitled for the custody of the child. Accordingly, permanent custody of the minor is granted to him," the court ruled, dismissing the estranged wife's apprehension that the girl was reaching the stage of puberty and needed her constant care and guidance.
