Opposing the Marriage Laws (Amendment Bill 2010), members of the Children’s Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting (CRISP) will stage a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on August 18.
The amendment seeks to make irretrievable breakdown of marriage a ground for divorce.
CRISP president Kumar Jahgirdar told presspersons here on Thursday that the proposed amendment would enable a husband or a wife to deliberately rock their marriage and create a breakdown to seek divorce.
“Divorce will be granted by court even if the other spouse is opposed to it and shows his/her willingness to continue the marriage. Moreover, the person applying for divorce does not have to prove any cruelty by his or her spouse. They just have to apply for divorce and they will get it under the ‘no-fault divorce’ clause. Moreover, children by default will remain with the mother and they will be deprived of fathers’ love, care and affection,” he said.
CRISP had already written to MPs from Karnataka to oppose the Bill’s passage in Parliament. A demonstration is also being planned outside the Law Minister’s residence in New Delhi, according to Mr. Jahgirdar.
